Full-Day Wild Great Wall Hike: Shixiaguan (Stone Gorge Pass) – The Authentic, Unrestored Adventure
Your day begins at 8:00 AM with a hotel pickup by your local English-speaking tour guide and private driver.
You’ll head to the Shixiaguan Great Wall—also known as the “Ruined Badaling” or “Wild Great Wall”—located just 5 km southwest of the restored Badaling section. Officially recognized as the only unrestored stretch of the Great Wall around Beijing that is open to the public, Shixiaguan offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the Wall’s original state. With only minimal safety additions like iron railings and wooden walkways at the very start, this section remains largely untouched by reconstruction—making it a favorite among international hikers seeking authenticity, while domestic tourists typically visit the restored Badaling nearby.
The trail begins near the historic Shixia Pass (Stone Gorge Pass)—once a vital gateway connecting the eastern and western arms of the Wall, and the western gate of the Badaling Defense System. Though the pass itself was destroyed in 1644 during the fierce battle between rebel leader Li Zicheng and Ming Dynasty defenders, its legacy lives on in the rugged stones you’ll walk upon. Li Zicheng, who briefly overthrew the Ming and declared himself emperor of the short-lived Shun Dynasty, changed China’s course here—adding a layer of dramatic history to every step.
Your hike covers approximately 7.5 kilometers along the undulating ridgeline, taking 3–4 hours to complete. While the terrain is challenging in parts—with steep climbs, uneven steps, and exposed sections—the reward is immense: panoramic views, crumbling watchtowers, and the profound silence of a truly wild Great Wall. This is the real, original Wall—untamed, atmospheric, and awe-inspiring.
Essential preparation: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers, and bring sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, and plenty of water. This trail is best suited for those with moderate fitness and a spirit for adventure.
After your hike, refuel with a hearty local Chinese lunch at a nearby restaurant.
Finally, you’ll be comfortably transferred back to your hotel, carrying the unforgettable thrill of having walked where few modern travelers dare—and seen the Great Wall as it truly was.
